Over the last few years, the use of formal training and examinations has been
recognised by the
BBKA
(British BeeKeeping Association) as an important way of
increasing both the knowledge of beekeepers and allowing
others to gain proficiency in this craft. Courses and
examinations are available at all levels, starting with
junior and beginners' classes, right up to diploma level.
The Chelmsford Division of the
EBKA (Essex BeeKeeping Association) runs a beginners' course
each year. The course is very popular and
provides a valuable insight into the working of the
hive. The syllabus of the course broadly aligns with the
Basic Certificate in beekeeping. The course runs 6-8 weeks and is normally held on a
weekday evening, at a nominal charge.
After completing the beginners'
course, students will be in a position to move on to a
practical course (April - May), where
they can gain experience in handling and manipulating
bees.
Details of courses run by the
Chelmsford Division will be posted on the
Latest courses page when available.
